  1. Formal pictures are those which the high street pro takes. They
  2. are the likenesses as the sitter would like to be.

  4. Often, formal pictures will be head and shoulders with fairly
  5. standard composition - the type of shot you expect to see in a
  6. frame on the sideboard.

  8. In the early days of photography, all portraits were 'formal',
  9. because the subjects had to remain still for long periods to get
  10. sharp results. There were even neck clamps to keep heads still.

  12. I suppose much wedding photograhpy can be considered formal.
